assignment 1 rough draft

  1. waking up and taking charge is a essay by Anya Kamentz and she takes a look at college today and talks about the importance of students coming together and having a voice to get change done. she tells students to form pacs almost like a political party does. she states that this will give them a louder voice and more likely to be heard. I feel that that she does bring up very good arguments that could get the problem solved all that has to happen now is to get the students to follow through which is the hardest part.
  2. one part of the essay that stood out to me the most is where she talks about how if millions of 65 year olds can come together and get change done in what they are fighting for then why cant we. The next thing is where she talks about the incident at Yale. Only 15 students participated and got nothing done. This all leads back into my thesis that she may have strong encouraging words but its hard to get students to mass up like that. You could say it has to do with lack of time. I think it has to do with fear. I feel more students would go if they saw an already large number there and protesting. no one ones to go out to protest and there only be 15 people. you are more likely to get punished.
  3. of the four forms of appeal i see three of them being used in this essay. the three i see are reason, character, and emotion. you see reason when she states why she wants people to form PACS and that doing this will bring down tuition. this leads into emotion because as a college student paying for myself. cheaper college sounds like the best thing in the world and i doubt im alone on that. and finally character, for this one all you have to do is look at that authors background and you will see years dedicated to this subject.

CL 2/13

  1. the claim is that “Young people urgently need a strong national generational movement.”
  2. the claim is absolute.
  3. this would not be the case if the student reading this was on scholarship.
  4. the reason is that if people don’t stand up and stand together that college will become more and more out of reach
  5. evidence that is given to help prove her argument is “Well, look, if 35 million people over fifty can band together to demand respect from Congress, so can we.”
  6. i would say that this piece of evidence is good in the fact that it shows a group coming together to fight something can work. The part that makes in not good is that it is just one examples of non college students coming together. 35 million is a lot of people and when you look at the failed school ones there were only 15 people.
  7. action can create a better system
  8. yes because these board officials in charge of tuition have to be elected into office
  9. couldn’t find any counter arguments. One thing that should have been brought up are students on scholarship or students who get a lot of money from FASFA or come from parents with money

HW 2/11

I feel like this passage is the most controversial one that we have read so far. this is because it doesn’t just have two sides like the other stuff we have read, it involves politics. in today’s age arguing politics is something that you cant escape from. when politics are used it makes it very hard for there not to be two very distinct sides, and these two sides will not budge. The view i get from is that i see her ideas as valuable ones. She brings up very good points and strategies to tackle the problem of college debt. It also helps supporting her ideas when you look at her background. When you look at it you see years devoted to likewise work. Another reason that i find her reason believable is because we also read another passage on a similar topic. this time around the author is not as credible seeing that is background isn’t in the topic up for debate.

Cl 2/11

9. persuading because she is try to get the reader to agree with what she is saying and join the fight against college dept and how expensive it is

10. i would say that her paper falls in line with of the four criteria. it takes her until the very end of the essay till bring up the counter to her argument allowing her to achieve all four of the criteria.

Cl 2/6

  1. character form. this is because the author talked about their time in college. they then compare their time vs how it is now
  2. the author uses persuading to try to make readers agree with that the author is trying to state.
  3. yes because he brings up points that are valid. like with the cost and how many people are graduating now vs in the past.
  4. i agree with the part stating that there are alternative to college that are better for people. i disagree with the point that college is completely useless.
  1. a shared topic is college and how expensive it is
  2. college dept talks about alternatives to college, while wake up and take charge talks about the politics surrounding college
  3. yes i find her as a good spokesperson because of her education on the topic and how much time she has spent on it.
  4. very controversial because anytime politics is brought up there are going to be two sides.
  5. students trying to save money in college and not have that much dept
  6. people who work for the university that need the money
  7. claim: college is too expensive, reason: lots of people have college dept, evidence: college dept is becoming more popular
  8. emotion because no one wants to be suffocated with college dept

HW 1/28

claim: a college degree is not as useful today as it was in the past

reason 1: college is too expensive now and not worth the debt

evidence: it is harder for college students to find jobs and they start facing financial troubles with student loans debt right away

reason 2: more people have a degree now then in the past

evidence: it use to be just going to college was good enough. now you need a top college or ivy league school to be set apart.

HW 1/30

  1. i would say that most people would agree with her view that college needs to be cheaper. the part that makes it controversial is that some people believe in free college and others understand that that isn’t possible
  2. the people who would agree would be students and family members especially from lower income situations. this would help more people afford school.
  3. people who wouldn’t agree would be higher up school officials because that is less money for their institution.

CL 1/30

  1. I believe that this argument is very controversial to students who are not athletes, and who work hard in their selected major. I feel student athletes will agree with this view because of the hours they put into their sport.
  2. Claim: Jenkins believes that athletes should be able to major in sports and not have to have another non spot major
  3. reason: sports are a skill and take time like other majors
  4. evidence: talked to the director of the Yale theater about her argument and they both agreed
  5. the value of a degree has gone down because there are many more people are graduating with degrees now then there was in the past.

Cl 1/28

  1. convincing
  2. they spent more time on joking around rather then staying on topic
  3. the example that was given was more focused on murdering someone rather then the topic
  4. no they did not . they strayed way off from the initial topic. and the final had nothing to do with the initial argument

these new criteria would help because it would help give me another way to view the question and answer it with longer responses
