Assignment 2 rough draft

Jacob Summe

It is hard today to look at the news and not hear about a shooting. Whether it is a gang related incident or a mass shooting, death has become part of the American culture. As sad as that may sound, it is the truth. On average, one hundred people die everyday all across America as the result of a gun. This number being only deaths doesn’t take in to consideration violence committed with a weapon that doesn’t involve a death. This is how the United States classifies a mass shooting, “Mass shootings are incidents involving multiple victims of firearm-related violence. The precise inclusion criteria are disputed, and there is no broadly accepted definition. This includes all, even where everyone involved is known to each other.” In the year 2018, the United States had 323 mass shootings. After looking at these numbers its hard to see why guns are not banned yet. This is where the tricky part is, as there are many laws that help protect gun owners. This begs the question, what steps can American law makers make that both protect its citizens as well as protect their second amendment.

Like stated before a mass shooting is when there are multiple people hit with a bullet. There are a couple of these shootings that I would like to focus on today; The Vegas shooting, The Virginia Tech Shooting, and The Sandy Hook shooting. The reason that I want to focus on these shootings is that they are part of the top five mass shootings in United States history and they all are very different. The first one is the Las Vegas shooting. 851 people were injured with 58 people killed. This happened is 2017 at a country concert. The thing that stands out about this shooting was that the weapons that were used were found to be illegal and the shooter stated that he was a member of ISIS. The next two shootings are similar in the fact that they happened at a school but both still very different. The Virginia Tech shooting happened in 2007 at the University of Virginia Tech. 32 people were killed in this event. The Shooter used two semi-automatic hand guns and ran through the halls here. The last Shooting is the most tragic seeing that it took place in a grade school. This is the Sandy Hook Shooting. 26 people would die in the school having 20 of them being children between the age 6-7. The shooter used a semi-automatic rifle and a handgun. After looking at all the innocent lives lost its hard to not get upset and want to bring these tragedies to an end. What can the United States do so that its citizens feel safe to go out or to even send their kids to school.

The other part of this argument about how to handle gun control is that American citizens have the right to own a gun. Now there are some rules; to automatic guns with out a license that takes years to get and multiple background checks by multiple agencies, no bump stocks, and if you have a felony you can not own a gun. When people see that number of shootings in America it is easy to understand why they think all guns are the problem. It those who look into it more and see why banning guns as a whole wont solve the problem. The U.S department of justice did a study where they looked at all the prisoners that are in jail for crimes with a gun and found “Fewer than 1 in 50 (less than 2%) of all prisoners had obtained a firearm from a retail source.” this means that 98% of them obtained the gun illegally. So banning guns would stop 2% of shootings. The other issue with banning guns it that it is in the U.S constitution that citizens have the right to own a firearm. This brings up the question. What can the United States do to help prevent gun crimes if just banning guns all together wont help. This is where the law makers come into play. Both sides need to come together and find a way to first increase the time of background checks for firearm purchases and second, find a way to slow down the selling of illegal firearms on U.S soil.

In conclusion, something needs to be done when it comes to gun violence and it needs to happen soon. No American should have to be afraid of going out because of the chance they are part of the Next mass shooting. No child should have to be taught what to do in case of a school shooter. At the same time law makers have to understand that when this country was founded that Forefathers wrote that every American has the right to obtain a firearm. This being said, it it now time for us as citizens to vote in law makers that understands this and wants to make change. As a gun owner I still want my right to own a gun, but as a student I also don’t want to live in a world where a shooter could open fire at any moment.

after doing quite a bit of research on this topic that it is important to protect both students as well as peoples right. The conclusion i came to was that there needs to be stricter laws on who can obtain a gun and the process on how they get it. doing this one prevents further school shootings, two protects peoples rights to own a gun. keeps guns out of peoples hand that want to own them for the wrong reason. rebuttal to these arguments would be one of two things. one, just ban guns all together. this would then create illegal gun trade making only bad guys have the weapons. second, no more laws. this would allow mass shootings to continue.

my topic is can gun laws that making buying guns sticker prevent mass shootings. this topic is important to me because i am a student in college and i have a sister that is in high school and i know the possibility is out there that we might encounter a school shooter situation. I also am a person who supports the rights for people to have a licensed firearm and the second Amendment. Falling into both of these categories i feel gives me a unbiased point of view. this should be important to others because as sad as it is, this it the world we live in and shootings do happen. We need to work together and come up with a way to protect both American school children as well as our constitutional rights.

For Wayne LaPierre and Gov. Dewine it would have to be over email seeing that they are both very busy at the moment, especially Gov. Dewine he has something much bigger on his plate.

for the student it could maybe be over Facebook or also email. would just have to search up people and make sure they would be okay talking about the subject

the anti gun activist. im sure i could find someone down on main campus, seeing that colleges normally hold students with very strong view points. or i could contact a person by phone or email.
